ALL MY SECRETS
i had originally intended to update my blog today on the subject of the garden challenge i’m giving myself, or perhaps on Why “Avatar” is Anti-Terrallectualism (otherwise known as Why I Thought It Sucked). but then…
this afternoon, after a morning of student loan deferment, financial organizing, and general tedium, i decided some fresh air would do me good. i wrapped fern up in the babyhawk, grabbed the dog, and went for a walk. i headed towards alamo square, where i have been finding solace lately amongst the stunted monterey cyprus and muddy robin hopped grass. as i headed up steiner street, i came upon the old fir and redwood trees just past the corner. and i saw Something at the base of one:
i stepped closer, and this is what i found:
i picked it up (wouldn’t you?):
and turned it over:
then i opened it:
i actually questioned for a minute if i should indeed consider myself “the finder”. and then realized that super secret awesome notes don’t find their way into my hand that often, and i should accept ownership of grace. here is what the note says:
I dare you to complete these 5 things by the upcoming Monday Morning:
- lay naked on a roof top
- tell 5 people that you love them
- ask someone you’ve never met before for a hug
- speak in tongues for 3 mins every day until all other tasks are completed
- write a list of your secrets and leave them in a very public place
To be fair I’ll reveal some of my secrets too…
but of course i’m not going to tell you those. it’s a secret!
at the bottom was the signature “Lu. P.” and “p.s. I love you”.
I love you too, Lu.
i think i’ll have no problem completing the dare. the hardest may be asking a stranger for a hug.
the rest of the walk was lovely. i discovered a “shoe garden” i had never noticed before, and appreciated some poppies in bloom. i remembered that last night i had a dream about all the japanese plums in the city, that they were in early bloom. i thought to myself, “but it’s only january”, and walked under petals softly drifting down.

oooooo I sooooo want to know the secrets Lu left. That is exactly the perfect kind of finding thing that someone like you should stumble upon. I am sure you will have no problem asking a stranger for a hug. I think speaking in tongues would be the hardest for me. I only have one.
The hug dare can be completed by helping a stranger out, then asking for a hug as payment for helping him/her or as a way to say good bye. The rest are easy.
I love that, what a wonderful thing to find on a walk!
Don’t you already speak in tongues for like 2-3 hours everyday to little Fern?
tongues
This is awesome!

Dude, I’m gonna hide something like that for my kids to find! So spontaneously enriching for some random challenge of the personal type on a walk like that.
