About
ME
my name is mary. i moved to san francisco 12 years ago, with the desire to gather skills to bring back to a small town. it was 1996, and even though i had graduated with a BA in theatre arts 2 years before, my life-long concern for what was happening in the world and to the earth began to take precedence. at that time i was interested in raising awareness around economic globalization and it’s impacts, on everything from food production to endangered species to indigenous cultures. i moved to san francisco and i gave myself 2 years minimum and 5 years max, promising myself i would get out at the end of that time. yet here i am still, in the same 5 bedroom flat i moved into, in the central neighborhood of the lower haight. since that time i have interned at the International Forum on Globalization, worked as a middle-school drama teacher, learned to hate the tourist industry at hostelling international, did professional tribal bellydance, taught environmental education with curriculum that i developed at a small farm, withstood roomates from hell, took it easy as a nanny for a few years, escaped the cat fights in bellydance and fell into the open and loving arms of burlesque and then finally found the right career fit with going to grad school for integral counseling psychology. my current configuration includes a partner, a daughter, a dog, an MFT internship, a garden, a determination to do urban homesteading, a heart homesick for the country and a $70,000 (and counting) debt for grad school.

you can also see the page “what is terrallectualism” for another answer. but basically, this blog is about my life, and even more about how i see the world, and how i experience circumstances. you can expect entries to be about: the seasons, love of nature, animism, shamanism, being a mom, being a family, eco-psychology, urban homesteading, food, gardening, philosophical musings, mythology, movies, traditional skills, astrology, being a crafty bitch and anything else that doesn’t make me cringe to share online.

I love how you write and your photos too that I just have to choose you to be awarded of the on going Versatile Blogger Award

I stumbled here via 6512 and growing’s blog and feel so comfy. I LOVE finding new blogs and being reminded that there are other people out there who share similar philosophies and passions in life.
Have a good one.
Well, we lived in the Bay Area for a few years until we finally decided to move away. And now we are up north enjoying the wilderness. But your latest post about finding and knowing home reminded me of my ongoing inner conversation. And I keep asking myself if I’ll ever want to ‘settle’ in one place, despite living in some very wonderful rural places due to husband’s career now as a park ranger.
OK, enough blathering here on your blog. Cheers to finding a new blog today for my reader.
Comfy is such a great description, and I’m so glad! And that “ongoing conversation” is also very apt…sometimes the conversation is private, and almost unnoticeable, until its spoken to, and you realize it’s been blaring internally for a long time.
I’ve already so enjoyed peeping in at your blog and look forward to more.
Hi Mary! I just saw your blog today on The GIrl Who Married a Bear. What a beautiful family you have!
